Butcher Works, Sheffield

The building, an old factory built in 1835, is of evocative Victorian nature, the red-brick buildings are set around a courtyard which stand in the shadow of the original chimney and was once at the centre of the city's cutlery industry. With many of the original features retained in the new development, the project has refurbished the derelict, Grade 2* Butcher Works buildings into a unique mixed-use scheme of residential, commercial and educational use. This project has successfully retained one of Sheffield's important historic buildings and safeguarded its existence for many years to come. The development has also had a massive impact on this area of Sheffield's Cultural Industries Quarter. Butcher Works has been recognised in the Best Building category at the prestigious Sheffield Design Award, organised by the Sheffield Civic Trust, which celebrates the excellence in the restoration, alteration, extension or improvement of a historic or existing building and Butcher Works was given a Commendation Award.
