Butcher Works, Sheffield

J F Finnegan Limited Race Cottam Associates Limited Eastwood & Partners

The building, an old factory built in 1835, is of evocative Victorian nature, the red-brick buildings are set around a courtyard which stand in the shadow of the original chimney and was once at the centre of the city's cutlery industry. With many of the original features retained in the new development, the project has refurbished the derelict, Grade 2* Butcher Works buildings into a unique mixed-use scheme of residential, commercial and educational use. This project has successfully retained one of Sheffield's important historic buildings and safeguarded its existence for many years to come. The development has also had a massive impact on this area of Sheffield's Cultural Industries Quarter. Butcher Works has been recognised in the Best Building category at the prestigious Sheffield Design Award, organised by the Sheffield Civic Trust, which celebrates the excellence in the restoration, alteration, extension or improvement of a historic or existing building and Butcher Works was given a Commendation Award.

J F Finnegan Marks 70th Anniversary

Finnegan celebrated its Platinum anniversary with a memorable party for the staff and some friends. The delicious aromas of the BBQ wafted across the picturesque Whirlowbrook Park and guests sipped champagne on the elevated terrace outside the Hall with spectacular views of the gardens. A band played acoustically before turning up the volume for the main event towards the end of the evening. We had a great evening. In the year that saw the end of World War II, seven decades ago the building company was established in Sheffield with the object of participating in the post-war housing programme. Today, J F Finnegan Limited operates nationwide with an outstanding portfolio featuring industrial, commercial building work as well as residential work, all at the cutting edge of UK construction.
